CBD can help alleviate the soreness you feel after a workout and help you recover faster. Think about these five key effects of CBD:
- Improved sleep
- Reduction of muscle spasms
Each time we exercise, we are breaking our bodies down so that they can rebuild themselves better and stronger. Both of those processes – the breakdown and the rebuild – can be painful. We all know the long-term benefits of regular exercise are worth it, but the soreness and discomfort we experience in the short term can be a serious deterrent.
What Causes Post-Workout Soreness?
When you put strain on your muscles during a workout, they tear. Teeny tiny microscopic tears. As our bodies repair these little tears, they make the muscle fibers stronger and more durable. This is how muscle mass is built.
I don’t know about you, but anytime I hear the word “tear” when talking about my body, I immediately think of pain. And with good reason. This tearing-and-repairing during and after working out triggers inflammation. And inflammation is never pleasant. This specific type of post workout inflammation and subsequent aching is called Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS).
CBD and Inflammation.
Of the myriad health benefits of CBD, its anti-inflammatory properties are probably the most extensively researched at this point. Cannabinoids are potent anti-inflammatory agents as a result of apoptosis, which is a form of programmed cell death that occurs in multicellular organisms. So the less inflammation, the less pain.
CBD and Sleep and Recovery.
Sleep helps the body heal. It’s the only time your muscles can fully rest and recover. So, if sleep is impeded due to pain, muscles are not given time to rejuvenate. CBD has anxiolytic (anxiety-inhibiting) properties AND CBD may help improve REM sleep abnormalities therefore enabling the body to have a deeper, more restful sleep. Think reparative sleep.
All that muscle tearing and increased blood flow and dehydration can also lead to muscle spasms. A working muscle is a muscle that isn’t resting and therefore not recovering. Cannabinoids are known to have antispasmodic properties, calming and relaxing your muscles so they can rebuild and recover. Eating a banana and/or drinking some coconut water with your CBD will really help things out when it comes to muscle cramping and spasms.
CBD as Antioxidant.
Physical exertion is associated with an increase in oxidation in the body. CBD has been found to protect cells against damage caused by reactive oxygen molecules. In fact, CBD is thought to be a stronger antioxidant than vitamin C or vitamin E. Less oxidation translates to quicker overall recovery.
I barely have time to work out. I mean, my schedule is packed! And when a 30-minute workout is followed up with a full day of feeling sore and slow, well, I find myself finding any excuse I can to not do it. By supplementing my exercise routine with CBD, my recovery time is cut in half. This means I’m less likely to skip the workout and more likely to hit the gym sooner and more often.
